Speech Therapy won Speech Debelle the 2009 Mercury Prize, becoming the first hiphop artist since Dizzee Rascal in 2003 to win the award. It is the lowest-selling album to have ever won the Mercury Prize, selling only around 3,000 copies at the time of winning the prize. Since her win, the album's sales have risen considerably and her last total stood at 10,000, although this is still a low sales increase for a prize winner and because of these comparatively low numbers that she severed ties with the label, Big Dada. This album was mostly recorded in Melbourne, Australia and produced by Wayne Lotek (known for his work with Roots Manuva and Lotek Hifi).
